North Johnson: Gwinnett Braves

08/11/2014 @ 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm

The 2014 season marks North Johnson’s 37th in minor league baseball and 27th as a General Manager. This upcoming campaign will be his fifth year with the Gwinnett Braves.

Prior to arriving in Gwinnett in 2010, North served as the General Manager of the Class-A Advanced Myrtle Beach Pelicans from September, 2006 through January, 2010. Under his guidance, the Pelicans broke their per-game average attendance mark in 2009. In 2008, North was awarded the Carolina League Executive of the Year Award after leading the Pelicans to a franchise attendance record and overseeing the highly successful California-Carolina League All-Star Game. His tenure in Myrtle Beach also saw a $2.5 million renovation project of BB&T Coastal Field.

From 2004 to 2006, North served as the General Manager of the Class-A Advanced Rancho Cucamonga Quakes, the California League affiliate of the Los Angeles Angels. He was instrumental in additions and improvements to the Epicenter, the home of the Quakes. For his outstanding work and vision in Rancho Cucamonga, North was selected as the California League’s Executive of the Year in 2005.

His time in Gwinnett, Myrtle Beach and Rancho Cucamonga all followed a successful 17-year run as the President and General Manager of the Class-A Kinston Indians. North captured the Carolina League’s Executive of the Year award an impressive three times while helming the Indians, receiving the honor in 1988, 1994 and 2000. The franchise itself received the coveted Bob Freitas Award in 1994, honoring the best Minor League operations at each class level. In 2003, to show their appreciation for his service, the city of Kinston handed North the “Keys to the City.” In 2004, he was the first inductee into the Kinston Indians Wall of Fame at Grainger Stadium.

Johnson has made and continues to put a focus on charitable organizations and the community he lives in. He remains actively involved with the ALS Association, Boy Scouts of America, Gwinnett Chamber of Commerce and American Cancer Society.
