From MJ Blakely, Food Drive Project Coordinator:
On November 6, 2010, the Rotary Club of Lawrenceville held a food drive at the Kroger on Riverside Drive to benefit the Lawrenceville Co-Operative Ministries. It was a bitter cold day. The lows were in the thirties, and it never reached more than fifty degrees. However, the generosity and compassion of those that donated to the Lawrenceville Co-Op warmed all of our hearts.
We only asked that shoppers get an extra item or two to donate, but many of them came out of the grocery store with carts full of items to donate, and those without time to shop gave cash donations. Parents used the opportunity to teach children the importance of giving by allowing their children to place the donated items into the collection bins. Some charitable givers even remarked that the Lawrenceville Co-Op helped them when they were in need.
At a time when our economy is struggling you might expect charitable giving to decline, but here in Lawrenceville people used the food drive as an opportunity to take matters into their own hands. By donating to the Lawrenceville Co-Op, they decided that they would make a difference in our community, and they did. That afternoon the Rotary Club of Lawrenceville delivered an entire pick-up truck and mini-van full of food and other items to the Lawrenceville Co-Op.
