Alliance for Smiles (AFS) was founded in October of 2004 by five members of the Rotary Club of San Francisco who had  been previously involved for ten years with cleft lip and palate reconstructive surgery.

Five missions have taken place so far in 2012, including a full mission and a teaching mission to China, and a mission each to Ghana, Cameroon and Tanzania. Two more missions are scheduled for this fiscal year, both to China.

• Small Rotary Clubs: Sponsor one child at $1,000 per surgery or combine with other clubs (Sponsorship range = $250 to $1,000)
• Medium Size Rotary Clubs: Sponsor 2-5 children at $1,000 per child (Sponsorship rang = $2,000 – $4,999)
• Large Rotary Clubs: Sponsor 5 or more children at $1,000 per child (Sponsorship range = $5,000 and above)
• Club/District Sponsorship of an entire AFS mission = $50 to $75,000

AFS will encourage Rotarians, while on site, to explore additional ways they can make an impact on a community through other Rotary based humanitarian projects such as eye care (Rotavision), heart surgery (Gift of Life), and educational projects.

Alliance for Smiles also works with schools, Interact Clubs, and Rotaract Clubs by encouraging them to sponsor one surgery or part of a surgery and hold activities to raise funds to provide financial support. Alliance for Smiles will follow up with pictures of the child treated so as to create awareness of the results of the donation and of the importance of being connected with the broader world community.
